In a couple of interviews, the author has described using social media to generate hype in a pretty unusual way. The anonymous author allegedly pretended to be his own publishing company when approaching some of the larger book store chains in the US (Powells, Books a Million, Barnes and Noble) and the book has now been reprinted on an imprint of Simon & Schuster due to overwhelming demand. I was intrigued when I learned that this book went from cult sensation from national bestseller over the course of the last few months. Out of touch English teachers do this with books (or worse, specific translations or editions of books) that they enjoy without checking the availability. ![]() At first I was thinking it was an out-of-print book assigned in local schools. It seems that it was initially self published and sold in some small bookstores in Amsterdam, Paris, and New York. I work at a bookstore and for the last month or so "Diary of an Oxygen Thief" by Anonymous has been FLYING off of our shelves.
